We've all daydreamed about the day our very own prince charming gets down on one knee and asks us to spend the rest of our life with him – we dream of the perfect setting and that most romantic of gestures. Well, my dream became a reality a week ago, and boy, was I surprised!
If you have been following along with my previous posts, you will know Matt and I have been together for quite some time... 5 years to be exact. So recently we've started to have more serious “adult” conversations about the future, children, and marriage. The idea of starting a family is so exciting. We talked about getting engaged and what kind of wedding we would have, and all the while Matt was planning away on a proposal without me even knowing it. I just thought that it would eventually happen down the road, when the timing was right.
A couple of weeks ago, my mom and my aunt came to visit from Nova Scotia, and we had plans for the family to head up to the cottage for my cousin's birthday. The night before we left for the cottage, my Dad (who had been working out west for months) unexpectedly walks through the front door. Complete surprise! Turns out Matt called my Dad that day to get his blessing, and by sheer coincidence, my Dad was on a layover in Toronto and decided to stay for the weekend. Matt picked him up from the airport on his way home, and they frantically came up with some story that they had been talking back and forth and planning this surprise visit for weeks. The first night at the cottage was so much fun. We sat around the bonfire, listened to music, laughed, and reminisced about our childhood in Cape Breton! The next day we took our time getting up, had a nice big breakfast and then packed up towels and headed down to the beach. It was such a beautiful, warm day for the end of September, so naturally we took full advantage and soaked up some rays. Everyone was having such a great time - the music was going and the beers were flowing.
Suddenly, Matt stops to make a toast to my cousin for his birthday, and also to toast the family all being together again - how sweet right? In my head, I was thinking how charming he was...
Once I clued in and realized that HE WAS ASKING ME TO MARRY HIM, I started to cry...
It was such an unforgettable moment and I’m so glad he chose to propose in front of my family. It made it that much more special and now we all have that memory to cherish for years to come.
We always dream of the perfect proposals, yet they never seem to be exactly what we imagined because sometimes they turn out to be so much better than we could have ever dreamed.
I know mine was. It was perfectly romantic, with a dash of Cape Breton. Can’t ask for anything better than that.
